Gays in the Government
Description
An account of the resource
One of the biggest contributions that Washington D.C. made to the early LGBT movement was through attracting attention about the debate surrounding whether or not gay people should still be allowed to have government jobs, and security clearance for the government job sector. Because the America Psychiatric Society still acknowledged homosexuality as a mental illness in the 1950-1960s, they were susceptible to blackmail, which made them a security risk. Senator Joe McCarthy included homosexuals on the list of people who needed to be investigated by his Congressional subcommittee. McCarthy and his chief councilman, Roy Cohn, fired hundreds of LGBT people form the government, during what was called The Lavender Scare.

Description
An account of the resource
After being fired from his US Government job in 1957 for being gay, Kameny appealed his case to the court system. He lost in the judicial system twice, and appealed his case to the Supreme Court with a carefully written, unapologetic, 64 page writ of certiorari where the case was unanimously dismissed on March 19th, 1961. This document is his 64 page writ, and Kameny's appeal was used as the basis for the Mattachine Society's defense of all the cases that they worked on for other LGBT people who had been dismissed from their jobs during the Lavender Scare.

This newspaper clipping talks about the trial of Benning Wenworth against the United States Federal Government that was fought after Wenworth last his security clearance as a government employee after he went public with his homosexual identity. The paper talks about how the government is not only searching for commies in the government, but now LGBT people are the targets for investigation in government jobs. Frank Kameny fought on this case, and this document contributes to showing how one of the biggest contributions that DC made to the movement was the controversy surrounding gays in the government

Percentages of Self-Identified LGBT People by State in 2010
Subject
The topic of the resource
LGBT Rights
Description
An account of the resource
This graph shows what percentage of the total population for each state self identities as LGBT. Individuals were polled during a study conducted by the Gallup Politics Polls in 2012, and the question was, "Do you personally identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?" This is the largest single study of the distribution of the LGBT population in the U.S. on record, and the first time a study has had large enough sample sizes to provide estimates of the LGBT population by state.
Despite the fact that this study was done many years after the initial LGBT Rights movement was occurring in Washington DC, this graph shows that the movement truly had a lasting impact on the culture of DC. Based on the data that shows DC as the "state" with the highest LGBT population, we can infer that LGBT equality has truly become a part of the district's identity.
