Title
Percentages of Self-Identified LGBT People by State in 2010
Subject
LGBT Rights
Description
This graph shows what percentage of the total population for each state self identities as LGBT. Individuals were polled during a study conducted by the Gallup Politics Polls in 2012, and the question was, "Do you personally identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?" This is the largest single study of the distribution of the LGBT population in the U.S. on record, and the first time a study has had large enough sample sizes to provide estimates of the LGBT population by state.
Despite the fact that this study was done many years after the initial LGBT Rights movement was occurring in Washington DC, this graph shows that the movement truly had a lasting impact on the culture of DC. Based on the data that shows DC as the "state" with the highest LGBT population, we can infer that LGBT equality has truly become a part of the district's identity.
